Tony Dokoupil's CBS Ratings Drop Sparks Industry Debate
Tony Dokoupils CBS Ratings Drop Sparks Industry Debate...
CBS News co-host Tony Dokoupil has seen a steady decline in viewership for "CBS Mornings" over the past six months, according to newly released Nielsen data. The show averaged just 2.4 million viewers in March 2026, down 12% from September 2025, raising questions about the program's direction.
The ratings slide comes as Dokoupil marks his fifth year alongside Gayle King and Nate Burleson on the flagship morning show. Industry analysts note increased competition from NBC's "Today" and ABC's "Good Morning America," both of which have gained viewers in the same period.
Media critics suggest the format may need refreshing. "Morning shows live or die by chemistry," said Brian Stelter, former CNN media reporter. "When one anchor's numbers dip consistently, networks usually make changes." CBS has not commented on potential lineup adjustments.
The trend became a talking point Wednesday after TVNewser highlighted the ratings data, sparking discussion on social media. Some viewers praised Dokoupil's hard-news approach, while others called for more personality-driven segments.
Ad buyers are watching closely. "Morning news drives significant ad revenue," said Mediavest analyst Jessica Reeves. "If this continues into Q2, CBS may need to rethink their strategy." The network recently lost its longtime "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell, adding pressure to stabilize its news division.
Dokoupil, 46, joined CBS in 2017 after stints at NBC News and AOL. He became co-host of "CBS This Morning" (now "CBS Mornings") in 2021. The show has struggled to close the gap with its rivals, consistently ranking third in the morning news race.
Network insiders say no immediate changes are planned. "Tony remains a valued part of the team," a CBS spokesperson told reporters Thursday. However, industry watchers note that morning TV is notoriously competitive, and prolonged ratings declines rarely go unaddressed.
