Patrick Warns Talarico Could Win Texas House Race In Surprise Upset...
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued a stark warning to Republicans on Monday, stating that Democratic challenger James Talarico could pull off an upset victory in a key Texas House district. The rare admission from the GOP leader has sparked intense speculation about shifting political dynamics in the traditionally red state.
The warning came during a private Republican donor meeting in Austin, where Patrick expressed concerns about Talarico's strong grassroots support and fundraising in House District 52. The district, covering parts of Williamson County north of Austin, has trended more competitive in recent years as suburban demographics change.
Talarico, a 32-year-old former teacher and current state representative, has outraised his Republican opponent Caroline Harris by nearly 2-to-1 this cycle. His campaign has focused on education funding and healthcare access, resonating with suburban voters who have moved away from the GOP in recent elections.
Political analysts note the district's Republican lean has shrunk from 13 points in 2020 to just 4 points in 2024. "When a top Republican like Dan Patrick sounds the alarm, it means their internal polling shows real trouble," said University of Houston political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus.
The race has gained national attention as a bellwether for whether Democrats can continue making inroads in Texas suburbs. A Talarico victory would mark the first Democratic flip of a Republican-held seat in the Texas House since 2018.
Early voting begins October 21 for the November 5 election. Both parties are expected to pour significant resources into the race following Patrick's unexpected warning.
