Virginia Beach Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, 5 Injured At Oceanfront...

A shooting near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront left three people dead and five wounded early Sunday morning, marking the city's deadliest gun violence incident in nearly five years. Police responded to reports of gunfire near 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue around 1:30 a.m., where they found multiple victims in what authorities describe as an "isolated incident" between known individuals.

The violence erupted during a crowded spring weekend at the popular tourist destination, sending panicked bystanders scrambling. Two victims died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Among the wounded, two remain in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.

Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate confirmed officers have identified persons of interest but made no arrests by midday Sunday. "This was not a random act," Neudigate stressed during a press conference. "We believe all parties involved were acquainted with one another."

The shooting has reignited debates about public safety in Virginia Beach, which saw a similar mass shooting in 2019 when a city employee killed 12 people at a municipal building. Sunday's violence occurred just blocks from where a tourist was fatally shot during Memorial Day weekend 2021.

Mayor Bobby Dyer called the incident "a tragic setback" for the coastal city of 450,000 residents. The Oceanfront district, typically bustling with spring break visitors, saw reduced foot traffic Sunday as yellow police tape cordoned off multiple blocks.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued a statement offering state law enforcement support, while U.S. Representative Jen Kiggans (R-VA) called for "swift justice." The FBI's Norfolk field office is assisting with ballistic analysis.

This marks at least the fourth major shooting incident near the Virginia Beach boardwalk since 2021, according to police records. The city council had approved $5 million for additional surveillance cameras and lighting upgrades last summer following previous violence.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as gunfire interrupted late-night activity at bars and restaurants. "People were screaming and running in every direction," said Marcus Ellerbe, a hotel employee working nearby. "You never expect this when you come to the beach."

Police urge anyone with cellphone footage or information to contact Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. The department plans increased patrols through the upcoming Neptune Festival in late April.

The shooting trends nationally as spring break gun violence draws renewed scrutiny. Similar incidents recently occurred in Miami Beach and Myrtle Beach, raising questions about seasonal security measures at coastal destinations.
