The USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier, has begun a scheduled deployment to the Mediterranean Sea as regional tensions escalate. The nuclear-powered vessel left Norfolk, Virginia, on April 12, marking its first operational deployment since becoming fully combat-ready last year.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed President Biden was briefed on the deployment but declined to specify potential mission durations. The Ford is expected to relieve the USS George H.W. Bush currently operating in the region.
