USAF Awards $2.3B Defense Contract To Beehive Industries...

The U.S. Air Force has awarded a $2.3 billion contract to Beehive Industries for advanced aerospace components, sparking debate over domestic manufacturing priorities. The five-year deal, announced late Friday, will support production of next-generation turbine engines at Beehive's Utah and Ohio facilities.

This marks the largest defense contract awarded to the Salt Lake City-based manufacturer since its 2021 founding. Analysts say the deal reflects the Pentagon's push to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for critical military hardware. Beehive beat out major competitors like GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney.

The contract is trending today as lawmakers question whether taxpayer funds should support a relatively new defense contractor. Beehive CEO Mark Johnson defended the selection, stating the company's 3D-printing technology offers "unmatched production speed and precision" for F-35 engine parts.

Labor unions have praised the deal for creating 1,200 new manufacturing jobs, while watchdog groups demand transparency about Beehive's foreign investors. The Air Force expects first deliveries by late 2027, with full production ramping up in 2029.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called the contract "a strategic investment in American innovation" during a press briefing Monday morning. Congressional hearings are expected next week to examine the selection process and national security implications.
