Roku Adds 25 New Free Channels In Major Content Expansion...

Roku announced a significant expansion of its free streaming lineup today, adding 25 new channels to its platform. The update brings popular networks like FilmRise True Crime, FailArmy, and The Walking Dead Universe to Roku's free ad-supported TV (FAST) service.

The move comes as streaming competition intensifies, with Roku aiming to strengthen its position as a hub for free content. The new channels include a mix of movies, TV shows, and niche programming across genres like true crime, comedy, and classic television.

Industry analysts note the timing coincides with growing consumer frustration over subscription fatigue. "Viewers are increasingly turning to free ad-supported options," said media analyst Sarah Johnson. "Roku's expansion directly addresses this shift in viewing habits."

Several newly added channels feature exclusive content, including The Walking Dead Universe channel offering behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews. The update is rolling out automatically to all Roku devices in the U.S. this week.

Social media reactions have been largely positive, with many users praising the diverse new options. However, some critics question whether the platform needs more content curation tools to help navigate the growing library.

This marks Roku's largest single content expansion since 2024. The company recently reported adding 1.8 million active accounts last quarter, bringing its total U.S. user base to over 70 million.

The update appears to be part of Roku's broader strategy to compete with free offerings from rivals like Amazon's Freevee and Walmart's Vudu. All new channels are available immediately through Roku's "Live TV" guide and channel store.

Viewers can access the content without any additional subscriptions or fees, though ads will play during programming. The company says average ad loads remain below traditional TV levels at about 5-8 minutes per hour.

Roku plans to announce additional international channel expansions later this month. The platform currently dominates the U.S. streaming device market with 38% share according to recent Nielsen data.
