Nelson County Inmate Escapes, Authorities Launch Manhunt...

A medium-security inmate escaped from the Nelson County Jail in Virginia early Saturday morning, triggering a multi-agency manhunt. The escape occurred around 3:30 a.m. when the inmate, identified as 32-year-old Marcus Dewayne Thompson, allegedly overpowered a corrections officer during a routine check.

Thompson was serving a seven-year sentence for burglary and assault. Authorities warn he should be considered dangerous due to his violent criminal history. The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office has deployed K-9 units and drones while coordinating with Virginia State Police.

Residents within a 10-mile radius of Lovingston, the county seat, received emergency alerts advising them to lock doors and report suspicious activity. Schools in Nelson County delayed opening as a precaution while law enforcement searched the area.

The escape comes amid heightened scrutiny of jail security nationwide following several high-profile incidents. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin authorized state resources to assist local authorities. FBI personnel joined the search by midday Saturday.

Thompson was last seen wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, which he may have discarded. Investigators found evidence suggesting he stole civilian clothing from a nearby residence. The corrections officer involved suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Nelson County Sheriff David Hill urged the public not to approach Thompson if spotted. "This individual has demonstrated he's willing to use violence," Hill said during a press conference. A $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his capture.

The escape is trending nationally due to its timing during National Crime Victims' Rights Week and similarities to recent jailbreaks in Ohio and Texas. Social media users are sharing the sheriff’s office bulletin, which includes Thompson’s mugshot and distinguishing tattoos.

Authorities established a tip line (434-555-0198) for sightings. Thompson has family connections in Richmond and Lynchburg, though investigators haven’t confirmed his direction of travel. All regional transit hubs have been alerted.

This marks Nelson County’s first inmate escape since 2018. State officials announced they’ll conduct a security review once the situation is resolved. The Virginia Department of Corrections confirmed Thompson had no prior escape attempts during his incarceration.
