Late-Season Winter Storm Warning Hits Sierra Nevada
Late-Season Winter Storm Warning Hits Sierra Nevada...
A powerful late-season winter storm is bearing down on California's Sierra Nevada mountains, triggering urgent warnings from the National Weather Service. The system, arriving unusually late in the season, could drop up to 3 feet of snow above 7,000 feet through Sunday evening.
The storm is trending nationally as it threatens major disruptions to mountain travel during peak spring tourism. Interstate 80 and other key Sierra passes may face temporary closures due to whiteout conditions expected Friday night through Saturday afternoon.
Meteorologists note this storm's timing is particularly concerning. "April snowstorms aren't unheard of, but this intensity so late in the season raises flooding concerns as warmer temperatures return next week," said NWS Sacramento forecaster Idamis Del Valle.
Local officials are urging residents and travelers to prepare for dangerous conditions. Placer County has activated its emergency operations center, while Caltrans has snowplows on standby along major routes. Several ski resorts, including Palisades Tahoe, remain open but warn of limited operations.
The storm comes as California's snowpack sits at 104% of average for this date, following a wet winter. Hydrologists warn rapid snowmelt from this system could strain reservoirs already near capacity.
Search and rescue teams across the region report increased calls about unprepared hikers caught in sudden squalls. "People see spring flowers in the foothills and forget winter still rules the high country," said El Dorado County Sheriff's spokesperson Tamara Briggs.
Power outages have already begun affecting higher elevations, with Pacific Gas & Electric reporting nearly 2,000 customers without electricity as of Friday morning. The utility has additional crews positioned in the Truckee area.
Travelers should check road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov before attempting mountain passes. The California Highway Patrol advises carrying chains, extra food, and emergency supplies through the weekend.
